Since the 2004 Tsunami, Khao Lak has greatly changed and is now fast becoming a popular tourist destination complete with modern amenities. Many locals can now speak basic English, and all roads are clearly signposted in both languages. Public transport is available but is irregular, making budget the preferred means of touring the area.

Khao Lak is not as visited as many other resort towns in Southern Thailand but it is surrounded by a wealth of attractions. Not far away are national parks, typical old Thai towns and untouched, deserted beaches. It is also the main gateway to the famous Similan Islands.

Khao Sok is situated on the mainland between Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and Koh Samui, some of the most popular destinations in Southern Thailand. Up close and very personal elephant encounters, along with jungle trekking on foot, and canoeing pristine waters are all possible here.

One of the most interesting areas is beautiful Cheow Larn Lake, located in the heart of the National Park with its floating raft houses and luxury tents … an absolute must-see!

Lam Ru National Park

The coastal beauty can be admired from the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. It was initially established as a terrestrial park however, in 1995 it was changed to a Marine National Park division due to the inclusion of several marine resources. This 125 sq km National Park offers a diverse collection of sea cliffs, hills, and beaches. Here can be found dome shaped granite mountains from the Cretaceous period, along with a lush tropical evergreen forest.

Khao Lak is surrounded by beautiful mountain and country side. There are numerous waterfalls around, and the best time of the year to visit them is between July and December. That’s when the waterfalls are biggest due to the heavy rain fall this time of year. Most of them are accessible after a short trek through the jungle. Be sure to bring drinking water, closed shoes and insect repellent, and a camera.

Please note … Some waterfalls are popular with Thai families. Thai people are not only very polite, but also conservative, and they do not expose their bodies like the some folks from other parts of the world. They go swimming with full clothes on, T-shirt, shorts and so on. Be respectful of the culture and don’t wear a bikini that is too provocative.

Takua Pa Old Town

The old quarter of Takua Pa in Phangnga is a poignant reminder of a glorious chapter in Thailand’s history. Often overlooked by travellers who pass it off as just too quiet, the old town area of Takua Pa district in Phangnga in fact worth a visit. This quaint area still resonates a glorious chapter from history dating back a few centuries, now, almost forgotten.

Drive Safely

Breath-tests are common along major routes, with average fines for offenders. Never drink and drive in Thailand as accidents normally involve motorcyclists who seldom come out of accidents unscathed and a simple holiday could turn into a costly court case or under the counter payments to the family involved by way of compensation.

Drive with care an attention to other road users and your stay in Thailand will remain accident free. All the rental companies we use in Thailand , Sixt, Budget and Thai Rentals include CDW and theft protection in prices. Additional cover may be purchased locally to reduce any excess to zero.
