While the city centre of Chiang Rai can easily be explored on foot, popular out-of-town destinations such as Phu Chee Fah and Doi Tung are best accessed with a self drive. Self-driving is an ideal way to discover this northern Thai province which is best known as the gateway to the Golden Triangle, the meeting point of three countries.

Within an hour’s drive of the city with is the amazing viewpoint of Phu Cee Fah, while the royal villa and flower exhibition of Doi Tung make for another worthwhile day trip. Well-maintained highways connect the city with other destinations in the north, with major routes clearly signed in English.

Doi Tung:

visit the Doi Tung royal villa and the adjacent Mae Fah Luang Garden for insight into this pretty mountainous area just an hour’s drive north of Chiang Rai city. The climate and landscape of this pretty area is reminiscent of Switzerland. Kids will enjoy a stop at Doi Tung Zoo.

Golden Triangle:

An hour’s drive to the northeast of the city takes motorists to this former opium stronghold where Thailand meets Burma and Laos. Enjoy a slow drive along the mighty Mekong River to Sop Ruak, the point where the Mekong meets the Ruak River

Phu Chee Fah:

this mountain, a 1 hour, 30 minute drive from Chiang Rai, offers superb sunset views of the surrounding landscape and a taste of rural Thailand. Parking is provided at the base of the peak, which is known for its overhanging rock ledge at the top. A favourite with photographers.
